Objective: Often cited as one of the greatest actors of all time, Laurence Olivier was certainly the foremost star of his generation when it came to producing and starring in Shakespeare, whether in the theatre or on the big screen. For many he was, and is, Shakespeare in performance. His stage portrayals of Macbeth, Romeo, Coriolanus, Malvolio, Mark Antony, Titus and Hotspur are now lost - he only directed three of his major stage successes for cinema - the funding cuts that met his production of "Macbeth" means it remains one of the great lost performances in the canon.
