Day 23 - the first movie you ever saw at the cinema.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - I was 4 years old. According to my parents, I spent most of the time standing up asking "When's it going to fly?" in a very loud voice.

Day 24 - a movie that you want people to watch at your funeral.
Some Like It Hot - For three reasons:
1) the irony of the title (I'll probably be cremated)
2) to cheer people up
3) the closing line of the film would make a great epitaph.

(A couple of years ago we went to the funeral service of a friend. He was very into his music, and among the tracks played during the service were "One Step Beyond" and "Going Underground")

Day 24 - A movie that you want people to watch at your funeral

Me and my body and all my organs and bits and bobs are going to whatever medical research and/or teaching facility can use them, so no funeral.

But there's a series of space docs [you can see them here] that might be a good accompaniment to chopping me up to my cellular identity. As they say in the movie business, you're nowhere without continuity!

day 25 - a movie that makes you laugh

I've mentioned a few already (Blues Brothers, Some Like It Hot, Carry On Up The Khyber), so in the interests of diversity, I shall choose Blazing Saddles

Day 25 - a movie that makes you laugh

Creature Comforts by Nick Park
5 minutes of fun-packed fun. I could see it thousands of times, I'd still laugh, still love it. I want this movie playing on the inside of my eyelids. Now. I do.

day 21 - a movie with a character that you would want to be

I'll go with Emma Thompson's character Karen Eiffel in Stranger than Fiction. The idea that a writer's words can have that much power and influence is something every writer dreams of. Of course, I would prefer it if this could happen without with such damaging effects to the writer.

Day 22 - A movie with a character that you wouldn't want to be:

Betty Mahmoody (played by Sally Field) in Not Without My Daughter. (What do you want? My daughter was inducted into the army today so I'm missing her right now.)

Day 23 - The first movie you ever saw at the cinema:

This was either 101 Dalmatians or Flower Drum Song I think I saw both of them in a theater but they were both released when I was only four years old, so only the former seems probable. Then again, I was six when both Goldfinger and Mary Poppins were released and Im 100% sure I saw both of them in a theater.

Day 24 - a movie that you want people to watch at your funeral.

I can't think why anyone would want to watch a movie at a funeral, but I do know what music I'd pick. There's an aria "Soave sia il vento" from the opera Cosi Fan Tutte and the version from the 2006 Glyndebourne production would be my pick.

day 25 - a movie that makes you laugh

I'm going to go with Monkey Business by the Marx Brothers for this one (although any Marx Brothers movie would do here).

day 26 - a movie that's really old, that you like

The original, 1939 version of Goodbye Mr. Chips.

La Roue by Abel Gance, 1923. Like it? More love it!! OK it's a tad long, ok it's a LOT long. And OK it's a tad melodramatic.

But honestly, if you can find a film with such a succession of masterly filmmaking techniques, some invented especially for this movie, and some - like the opening train wreck - which will just blow you away ... well, I've seen a LOT of movies and none comes close!

If you are or know a wannabe filmmaker, sit them in front of this classic and they will emerge with as much or more knowledge than 3 years of film school. Yes, it IS that good!

Man With A Movie Camera by Dziga Vertov [1929] because it's a film entirely about process, and that's one of the key elements that defines me.

In a world all about results, I believe we've lost sight of The Process of life. Vertov's witty, sometimes hilarious, gorgeous, and incisive documentary captures nothing but. If I could be transformed into a film, I'd choose this one.

It's on YouTube if You want to Tube it!

Thank you, BBabe, for turning me on to this film. I had never seen it before, but caught up with it last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Kid (1921) is my favorite of Charlie Chaplin's films and perhaps my favorite silent film of all time. It was Chaplin's first feature. Although he topped himself in terms of film technique several times in his career, I don't think he ever topped himself in terms of theme, drama, and characterization and the film technique is pretty extraordinary for 1921. I can think of no single feature film made before 1925 that feels more "modern" in terms of the editing, cinematography, and directing.

The Music Box (1932) - Laurel and Hardy.

I've been reading Paul Merton's history of Silent Comedy. Required reading if you have any interest in that era of movie making.

Darn. Its not on Netflix.

EDIT: It is on Netflix, but not available as of this writing. I saved it for when it does become available.

Lord of the Rings - In truth, I barely made it through the first part, but by the middle of the second one (after the trees bit) I was so bored I couldn't watch any longer. I did try to watch a bit of the third one but by then the glory of the landscape had worn off and Wood's monotone facial expressions just annoyed me. By that time I didn't even care if he succeeded in getting rid of the damned ring or not.
