day 21 - a movie with a character that you would want to be

So easy today, this is a long held, but ultimately futile ambition - James Bond - From Russia With Love, but there's so many films to choose from

Day 20 - a movie that makes you angry

The End of the Line - Robert Murray's doco about our dying oceans. This film should be required viewing on an annual basis for every person on the planet who thinks s/he can escape the effects of this wanton destruction. That does not mean the destruction of wontons, you silly sausage!

Day 21 - a movie with a character that you would want to be
OK - it's a toss-up between The Purple Rose of Cairo, so I could pop into the Pirandello-type world of cinema itself, and then make a guest appearance in real life

OR

2001: A Space Odyssey -- I'd be the floating foetus embarking on a universe of possibilities

"George Lucas in Love." Does anybody remember this viral short film from the late 1990s?

It was one of the first viral short films, several years before YouTube. It was a student film made at USC. The DVD of the short film briefly topped the Amazon DVD charts when it was released around the same time as The Phantom Menace DVD. The filmmaker went on to make one or two feature films. When the real George Lucas saw it, he was quoted as saying something like, "I wish that was how it happened."

Day 22 - A movie with a character that you wouldn't want to be:

Nixon

(...although I thought Anthony Hopkins did a wonderful job of interpreting him.)

I would not want to be Nafas, the Canadian of Afghan ancestry who returns to Afghanistan in an attempt to convince her sister not to commit suicide in Kandahar. This film is an unforgettable film that was shot about a year before 9/11, but feels like it takes place in Mad Max's post-apocalyptic era. I can't recommend this film higher, but it is extremely heartbreaking to watch.

Day 23 - The first movie you ever saw at the cinema:

Gone with the Wind

This is a tough one. My mother was a constant movie-goer and used to drag me with her from about age 2. I can't say I actually remember which movie I saw first, but Gone with the Wind was an annual attraction in Atlanta during the '40's so chances are that's it.

The first I can remember is Korda's Private Life of Henry viii starring Charles Laughton. Must have been playing in the cinema in the basement of MOMA in NYC, where my dad often took us to see classic films. I can still remember his pixie face justaposed with some angry rages. I'd probably have been about 5, maybe less.
