You can see why Will's keen to promote his son Jaden. The kid handles some difficult emotions with exactly the kind of sang froid which runs through the veins of a star. OK, this may not be the best vehicle for ... well, for anything really.

It's simplistic, unrealistic [even given its premise], and scores high on the "who cares" meter.

It also lacks the one quality that made daddy Will stand out from the get-go: humor. Will cut his comedy-teeth on telly, but honed them into big-jaw size with Men in Black and as a rapping Prince.

Sadly, Shyamalan's After Earth, based on Smith's original story, forgets that in the midst of hopelessness, what sees our species through is imagination and the ability to laugh. Will Shakespeare knew that. Will Smith doesn't.

Another one that sounded so bad reading the reviews, but looks lots better in the comfort of your own home. Will Smith & son Jaden invite cries of "vanity project," and the picture DID bomb -- but then, so did JOHN CARTER, and that one's TONS of fun.

It's a father/son deal, with Will as Gary Cooper or John Wayne, and Jaden as Monty Clift or Sharkboy/Lavagirl. Plus, it's set in the future! Plus, Night Shyamalan has kept his mitts off this story except in a directorial sense, and it looks great. Jaden looks shaky at first -- why did the dialect coach give the Smiths these broad Southern-sounding vowels? -- but finally settles down and lets you enjoy. Great effects, monsters, etc etc etc, but it's really a PG-13 family drama. I can understand the haters, but I'm not among them. A fun couple hours as a rental: as Bluto said about the Deltas' beer, "It don't cost nothin'!"
