Let me say right away that Belt and Baby definitely deserve their own ... I dunno ... short, series, feature ... something. Nuff said - go see it [oh,yeah - DO got see it], and you'll see why!
Big budget DreamWorks is a beautiful thing - when it works. Here, it works!
Now, neither you nor I nor your Aunt Agnes were around when Neanderthals and proto-HomoSapiens shared space on the planet - so how the hell do we know whether this film, albeit an animated confection, contains Da Crood Troot. Well, of course we know.
Which is certainly not the point. If we want anthropological and pre-historical accuracy, this is not a first stop.
If, however, we want some damn fine dialogue and innovative characters backed by delightful vocal delivery - start here and hang on tight.
The kids - always a good barometer - shut up. I mean they SHUT UP!! They laughed in the right places, they didn't fidget, they didn't whisper and yell. They sat still and watched.
I like those kids - and would invite them over for tea.
Onscreen, instead of accuracy, we get an overall intro to some hefty developmental planet stuff and some equally developmental people stuff. I just can't single out any particular performance - it's an ensemble piece in the very capable directorial mitts of Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders. And it didn't hurt to have John Cleese contributing to the story.
The animation's great; I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything with the 2D version.
GO. SEE. IT.
