Am I the only Man-child to have been disappointed in the cinema by this un-called for prequel?

It is like making a prequel of Casablanca set around Rick and Ilsa's affair in Paris.

The special effects are incredible and still manage to mantain the look of the original.

But that is where is ended for me.

Franco's Oz is too sleazy.

The witches are a collection of misogynist/biblical female stereotypes.

The side kicks Finley & China Girl seem to be the only ones who attempt to keep the magic alive.

It sags in the middle though the end is pretty good.

Basically, I agree with you. I do keep hoping for the "why" of any film - especially so-called remakes, which this really isn't.

I guess the reason that sorta satisfied is that at the end of Oz the first, the wizard's powers are proven to be deficient, which throws us all back on our own abilities to handle whatever life can throw at us. Even a tornado.

But, for most of the reasons that Beanie cites, none of the characters is given a fair crack of the whip of deception.

The kids in my audience didn't fidget too much, but there was no Big Buzz in the lobby.

Shame!
