TA:MOU = Themed Anniversary: Moving On Up

The Rules

Each Tuesday a theme will be decided based on the Anniversary of some significant event. All you have to do is trawl your reviews for any that relate to that event and post them here with a link.

You can post as many as you wish, so long as either the film or your review clearly relates to the theme. You can only post during the week of the current TA:MOU.

You don't have to say you voted unless you really want to - but you are expected to visit all the links posted.

ON THIS DAY: 25 September

we mark the death in 1987 of Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke, born in Illinois of German, Portugese and Irish ancestory. Despite personal problems, even scandals, she made the transition from silents to talkies with over 40 films. Nicknamed Rusty for her natural auburn hair, she became a screen icon under the name Mary Astor.

Pay tribute to this cine-legend with your fwfrs for her films.

Hail Mary!

When you wish upon Astor...

The Maltese Falcon

Update - two more wishes granted:

Across the Pacific

The Palm Beach Story

Unfortunately, that's all the Mary Astor I'm familiar with.

OK - here's something, but it will take lots more research. TA:MOU day coincides with the closing in 1996 of a national scandal in Ireland. Namely, the Magdalene asylums. They were homes where young unmarried mothers and "unruly" girls were sent to get the shit beaten out of them by nuns, and sexually abused by priests. There's one film specifically about them, but there are other films about young people being institutionally abused while incarcerated.

So - not exactly a fun topic, but certainly an interesting one.

Mary Astor's LOTS cuter!!!!

I've seen "The Magdalene Sisters". Good film.

But, yes, I'll stick with our Mary - got some reviews in the pending pot.
