Objective: Stephen Sondheim is undoubtedly the greatest living musical theatre writer having won Tony Awards for seven of his musicals, but still hasn't had the wider recognition he deserves when it comes to the big screen adaptations of his work. Aside from the classic "West Side Story", Sondheim's first job as a lyricist in the theatre, most have either been poorly cast or badly executed. Tim Burton's version of "Sweeney Todd" was a huge hit and went some way to addressing the dearth of decent attempts at his work, followed by Rob Marshall's impressive take on "Into the Woods". Hopefully there will be more to follow. Matches 1 to 14 out of 14 |
