Day 8 - a movie that you would like to have written
Platinum Blonde directed by Frank Capra in 1931. One of the best comedies ever ever ever ever. Well, no wonder - take a peek at the writing credits.
> Story co-written by Harry Chandlee who went on to win an Oscar for Sgt York.
> Adaptation by Jo Swerling, who co-wrote the book for Guys and Dolls on Broadway, and whose screen credits include Lifeboat, It's a Wonderful Life, and the Oscar winning The Pride of the Yankees.
> Dialogue by Robert Riskin who teamed up subsequently with Capra on Mr Deeds Goes To Town, You Can't Take It With You, and his Oscar winning It Happened One Night. They later parted company, but on Platinum Blonde the team was zinging!
I wish I could write just one page of dialogue as witty, hysterically funny, beautifully constructed, and loaded with character as anything in Platinum Blonde. Especially the scenes between Jean Harlow and Robert Williams, a superstar in the making, who died tragically of a ruptured appendix just 4 days after the film's premiere.

Writing two-character screenplays is difficult. Making the characters interesting enough, the situation real enough, and the dialogue engaging enough to sustain a 90-minute script is nearly impossible. I know... I've tried to write plays like that. Tom Noonan wrote such a play (a dark comedy that explores the personalities of two co-workers) then transferred it to the screen as writer, director AND star of the film.

"Lifted," the Pixar short film about an alien under the pressure in an abduction training test. I prefer to write short films with a simple premise (perhaps because I abandoned every screenplay I ever tried to write). "Lifted" felt like something I could have written if I was on the Pixar staff. |

day 09 - a movie that has a great musical soundtrack
As sung by the actors: The Commitments. Great movie, relly good music, and made "Mustang Sally" a really popular song.
With backing tracks: Grosse Pointe Blank. Loads of music that I liked during the 1980s. |

Prob'ly a cheat, but I'm gonna say Fantasia (the original). OK I admit, the soundtrack is the whole point of the film, but combining such great music with entrancing animation and some laugh out loud scenes has gotta be worth a mention.

GOLDFINGER Soundtrack - John Barry
Both with iconic main themes and other great instrumental tracks (and vocal in the case of Goldfinger)

day 10 - a movie that makes you fall asleep
Dammit, Janet, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". I've tried to watch this on at least four occasions, and dozed of in the middle of it every time.
I also fell asleep watching "Woodstock", but that probably had something to do with the atmosphere in the room at the time.   |

Well, let's face it, I can fall asleep watching anything if I'm sleepy enough! But of all the films that make me WISH I were asleep, I guess Pearl Harbor is right up there. Granted, it's noisy enough to keep me awake, but who cares?!

Out of Africa
I fell asleep when I saw it at the cinema (a rarity for me) and fell asleep again when I rented it months later (not so rare). At least the second time I could rewind and see it through. It still didn't impress me as much as I thought it would, based on reviews.

day 06 - a movie that reminds you of somewhere � The Impossible Years � this relatively unknown film (probably because it was pretty dumb) with David Niven was playing at Radio City Music Hall on New Year�s weekend between 1968 and 1969, so this film reminds me of a very memorable visit to New York.
day 07 - a movie that reminds you of a certain event � The Return of Martin Guerre � I was having labour pains throughout watching this film and it certainly reminds me of giving birth to my first born.
day 08 - a movie that you would like to have written - Bridget Jones' Diary - it may sound stupid, but many a time I thought "how could I update the story of Pride and Prejudice to something modern" and Helen Fielding did it for me.
day 09 - a movie that has a great musical soundtrack � Amadeus � hey, what can you say � Mozart was Mozart!
day 10 - a movie that makes you fall asleep � The Bridges of Madison County � not only was the film boring, but the book was even worse!

I know some people think The Land Before Time is a classic and it was a big hit at the time, but I always thought it was slowly paced and not a lot of fun to watch. |

Day 11 - A movie from your favourite actor:
84 Charing Cross Road
With very few exceptions, you can't go wrong with Anthony Hopkins. 84 Charing Cross Road is another of his wonderfully understated performances.
