Anyone caught this little beauty yet?

It's one of those rare horror films which is effective despite its low budget -- in fact, the stripped-down nature makes it work even better.

A few young people are trapped in a gas station. Outside is a nasty porcupiney monster. I won't tell you how everybody arrived, but this is the essential sitch within :20. There you have it. No spoilers.

It sounds derivative but feels fresh. My only beef is the hand-held cliche for the illusion of immediacy and the stutter-printing technique that has implied speed ever since 28 DAYS LATER and now comes along with every espionage-action pic there is. The laudable intention is to never give you a good look at the monster, so that you along with the characters keep on saying, WTF? But Ridley Scott achieved this same objective back in 1979, and he used sticks.

Acting and "tech creds" are swell; every penny's up on the screen. And though there's plenty of carnage, this doesn't feel like a slasher movie at all, but a good old-fashioned scarefest.

benj, I think you in particular are going to love this one, along with any fan of, say, THE DESCENT.
