While babybear disappeared off last night to watch Insidious 2, Mrs C and I took a look at Rush. What a treat it was.
Ron Howard directs this story of racing drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, and the events of the 1976 Formula 1 season. It's not just about the cars - in fact, there's more about the relationship between the two very different men than the racing. Both come from money, but both move on to do their own thing. Hunt is the playboy driver, getting by on raw talent, girls and champagne. Lauda is the cold calculating type, not doing anything without thinking about it twice.
The rivalry on and off track is nicely developed, although a little cheesy at times. The racing scenes are very well done, and the scenes of Lauda's accident and recovery show just how brutal and unsafe life was for an F1 driver in the 1970s.
Ron Howard has taken another story (like Apollo 13) where the end result is known, and managed to turned it into a tense tale, with some nicely handled lighter moments. Chris Hemsworth puts in a decent turn as James Hunt, but for me Daniel Bruhl steals it as Niki Lauda.
You may not know anything about Formula 1, motor racing, or the drivers, but don't let that stop you from catching this one. |

Probably the last time I watched Formula 1 was this era so lots of memories ( I hope ). Always loved James Hunt and enjoyed his languid commentary after his retirement. Hmm, getting all Proustian just thinking about it! |
