There's a guy who specializes in loving spoofs of movie clichs: Fifties B-movies, Thirties "old dark house" flicks, etc. His name is Larry Blamire, and if you love these sorts of movies too, you'll definitely get a kick out of his work, especially THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA, THE LOST SKELETON RETURNS AGAIN, and DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. [I have not seen his TRAIL OF THE SCREAMING FOREHEAD, because the only DVD I can find is Region 2.] He was reported to be prepping a third LOST SKELETON movie, THE LOST SKELETON WALKS AMONG US.

These movies are shot in color and dialed down to monochrome [the second half of RETURNS AGAIN is actually in color, as the characters clumsily and amusingly try to explain]. The quality of acting is deliberately B-movie style, done by a repertory company of 12 to 15 brilliant parodists, including Daniel Roebuck and H. M. Wynant. All of the things you perversely love about nave mid-century studio filmmaking is here: flying saucers [and a skull] swaying from strings, poorly-written "info dumps" in which characters speak aloud information that they should already know, the whole enchilada. It's easy to make fun of this stuff -- it's like lasering atomic fish in an astro-barrel -- but what Blamire & company also do is remind you why you loved it in the first place. I've enjoyed every one of his films, and can't imagine that other film buffs, like some of you, might not feel the same way.

I just rented Blamire's MEET THE MOBSTERS, for which he was evidently brought in after the fact [the only other rep-company actor who shows up is his lovely wife, Jennifer Blaire]. It's a goombah send-up, with most of the journeyman "goodfella" Italian actors employed, about a smarmy lounge singer who gets hired to sing ridiculous songs with [not-very-well] coded instructions for the hitmen. It's amusing in places, like a SNL sketch, but it's not hit-the-spot Blamire. Pass it by and hope THE SKELETON WALKS AMONG US gets made.

Animala and the rest return in THE LOST SKELETON RETURNS AGAIN, half of which is presented in STUPENDO-COLOR! [Just made that up, but it's yours, Larry!] Take these movies with long stretches in between. And don't forget DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. Regarding MEET THE MOBSTERS, I just saved you ninety minutes. You're welcome.
