You know what? This one is fun! Tom Cruise has acknowledged that he's 50. So he does what Clint Eastwood did: he plays a preternaturally aware character, the strong but silent type. AND IT WORKS! If Cruise can shake off the baggage of his pretty-boy era, he might actually get somewhere! A perfectly out-in-the-open pickpocket, but Paramount gets to lessen your wallet! |

Unfortunately, this film suffers from a couple of public perception problems. Firstly, any fans of the book seem to be upset Tom Cruise is, physically, about as un-Jack-Reacher-y as you can get and, secondly, for those of us who haven't read the book the poster makes it look like Tom Cruise in yet *another* kick-ass spy type thing.
Personally, I've not read any of the books and welcome any new instalments in the Mission Impossible franchise so went in suitably optimistic. Oddly, despite lots of ass-kicking and all it wasn't at all Mission Impossible-y- much more deductive and probably Cruise's most human superhero to date. The way he'd got beaten down along the way but (spoiler warning!) eventually won out reminded me of why I enjoy the likes of Indiana Jones in fact.
As Randall said- lots of fun this. It's got very effective fisticuffs and car chase action but also a believable character and a decent twisty-turny story that you actually have a chance at working out for yourself.
It says something when you come out of a film and immediately google the box office to see if there's a good chance of a sequel, but that's exactly what I did. I would happily see more of these. |
