It's a silly film. No, wait - it's a VERY silly film.
If you just must see a silly film, this one's for you. I grant you, it doesn't look like a silly film. I mean, would the sublime Viola Davis, the wonderful Jeremy Irons, or equally wonderful Emma Thompson go waaaaaaaaaaay out of their way to appear in such a silly film?
Uhm - yes.
Writer/director Richard LaGravenese, certainly from his history as the screenwriter of The Horse Whisperer, The Bridges of Madison County, et al, should know his way around a story.
But what has never upped the ante on his competence is true fire and pizzazz. Which, as it happens, it what this film lacks bigtime.
I guess we should just be happy that all these people can cash their checks for this at The Bank of Silliness. Those bills have gotta be paid!!

Yes, it's silly, but it's not hateful. A very winning romantic duo [psst: she's a witch "Caster"], Emma Thompson and Jeremy Irons rocking two melodramatic parts [the Southern accents may be a tad tin-eared, but not the one on male lead Alden Ehrenreich], and a fine Wagnerian bombast-fest set in backwoods South Carolina. LaGravenese handles the central love story with eyes open; one wordless push-in on Viola Davis when she's just realized something monumental just breaks your heart.
So, silly, yes. Anything with witches Casters is ipso facto silly, including ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. But don't throw it away. It's lightweight, but there's still lots to like. |
