Lemmy in for #859.

I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

The Race that Shocked the World was screened at this year's TIFF under the title 9.79*. It examines the infamous Seoul Olympics 100 yard dash where Canada's Ben Johnson (whose nickname was Big Ben) was stripped of his gold medal.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes you fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over 'cause you're gone

So here are my notes:
a) Dark Blood: Dealing with nuclear testing and its long-lasting deadly effects, the story portrays Boy, a young widower living in the desert on a nuclear testing site. Living as a hermit, he waits for the end of the world carving Katchina dolls that he believes have magical powers. This was the last film made by River Phoenix, which sat on the shelf for the last 19 years, until the director managed to get hold of the film and finished it.
b) Glory Road: In 1966, Texas Western coach Don Haskins led the first all-black starting line-up for a college basketball team to the NCAA national championship. Kind of like "Remember the Titans" for basketball - the coach recruits black ball players to win the championship.
c) The Grey: After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.
d) The Iron Lady: An elderly Margaret Thatcher talks to the imagined presence of her recently deceased husband as she struggles to come to terms with his death while scenes from her past life, from girlhood to British prime minister, intervene. Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Oscar for her role. She was good as Thatcher, though I tend to think the actual film itself was thin and lacked a solid premise to build on.
e) Logan's Run:: depicts a dystopic ageist future society in which both population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by requiring the death of everyone reaching a particular age. The story follows the actions of Logan, a Sandman charged with enforcing the rule, as he tracks down and kills citizens who "run" from society's lethal demand—only to end up "running" himself. This film is from 1976, though the story is older than that. I remember reading the book when I was in junior high school.

Toon-ups.

Notes:
In the Japanese version of The Borrowers, Sho is the boy who befriends Arrietty and explains the world outside.
Tekkon Kinkurito tells the story of two boys, White and Black, who must remain together to keep the world in balance.
The stories in Heavy Metal are linked by a black orb that strikes fear into the hearts of those that look into it.
In The Secret of NIMH the rats make plans to move several residences.

Spoiler (here and in the review) for The Upside of Anger: The father of the family has disappeared and they have assumed that he has walked out on them, but in fact he has died in an accident.

Trife falls into behaviour common amongst deprived urban youth.

A tribute to a Ratatouille review.

One mother dies; another mother (Bernice Graves) then turns up.
