Well Ben Kenobi says that his training is complete when he faces Darth Vader in combat, so for that reason it's at the end of Empire Strikes Back - but we all know that didn't go too well as an initiation ceremony. 
Edit: Come to think of it maybe it was Yoda who said that... or maybe it was Ben's ghost. Oh, I don't know. Someone said it. |

I always imagined he grew a pair of Jedi balls somewhere between Empire and Jedi.
We left him one handed at the end of Empire, I didn't really think he was in a good place. |

I am laughing so hard right now.  To answer your question, TP, as I recollect, in episodes I, II, & III, there are Jedi Masters & their apprentices are called Padawan. In Episode IV: A New Hope, Jedi Knight is first mentioned ( I don't remember in what context). In Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Yoda makes a reference that Luke needs no more training, but has to conquer the Dark Side. He doesn't become a Jedi Knight until he confronts Darth Vader & the Emperor is dead. I believe his father says something like "Your skills are complete." |
