Any suggestions for films in which a supporting character from another film is now the leading one? I would particularly like ones from films with more major characters, but for now I'll also include spin-offs which focus on one member of an ensemble cast. It would be better if the latter film wasn't planned at the time of making the former one, but for now I also won't exclude any on that basis. I'm only after full-length cinema-released films as there are lots of shorts and videos in this category. I probably only want ones where the character is played by the same person, but let me know if there are good exceptions and I may be persuaded. I definitely only want ones where the character was invented or significantly developed for the former film, e.g. not Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead or Wide Sargasso Sea.

The Hustler and Color of Money? Not exactly sure this works. Newman played Eddie Felson in both, first as the up-and-coming pool player then in the second, Cruise was the up-and-coming guy. |

There was a Bruce and Lloyd short made for the DVD release - I know, because I reviewed it on here a while back, and then the film was (rightly) removed from the site because it was a DVD extra. So, that short exists, but the powers that be have decreed that it's not FWFR worthy. |

Thanks for the suggestions.
Jurassic Park sounds a bit too much of a mess to wade through, and I don't view Jeff Goldblum's as a minor character in the first one, so I think it will be easiest to just leave that out. However, I like the idea of the complementary accolade and I'll do that.
Catwoman definitely doesn't fit. I'll check out Bruce and Lloyd -- thanks. |

How about the Jurassic Park franchise? Slightly tricky tho. If Sam Neill & Laura Dern are regarded as the leads & Jeff Goldblum & Richard Attenborough as supporting actors in JP1, then JP2 fits the bill because JG is the lead. Alternatively, if JP1 is regarded as an ensemble piece, then JP3 fits because SN is the lead.
It occurs to me that RA cameos in JP2 & LD cameos in JP3 if you ever decide you want to compile a complementary accolade about leading characters reappearing in later films as minor characters (altho of course there is the same issue about their relative status in JP1)...

Thanks for all of those: I'll check them out. However, Machete doesn't fit for me: Grindhouse wasn't released as such in the U.K. so he is more like the main character in a short in the pseudo-trailer; even had it been, he would be a pseudo-main character rather than a supporting one. Good idea though. |

The Ewok Adventure (1984)
If memory serves me right, Dead End (1938) starred the Dead End Kids who went on to make:
Angels with Dirty Faces ( 1939)
On Dress Parade (1939)
Give us Wings (1940)
They starred in more but this is just a few.
Machete (2010) must surely count as a film made from a film
Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

Don't know if this fits your criteria but the "Kids" from Dead End were featured in a few other Warners films and eventually starred in a number of low-budget features most prominently as The Bowery Boys.
Supporting characters Ma & Pa Kettle in The Egg and I went on to star in their own series.
Thanks, especially for reminding me about Charters and Caldicott. As soon as I saw Hitchcock in your post, they sprang to mind. However, should I list that film or Night Train to Munich? They are not top-listed in the latter but descriptions seem to focus on them.
I'd never heard of them before, but the Bowery Boys seem to have different names in Dead End, so that doesn't count even if they are esssentially the same; however, let me know if they go from supporting to starring with the same names in other films. |
