can anyone tell me what was the Jeremy Irons film where he had an affair with a married woman (it was her first affair) and they ended up in his friends loft apartment. His friend turns up with his ex-prostitute girlfriend and they all start arguing.

looked extensively on imdb - any help will be appreciated, thanks. K

Sounding more and more like Pinter's The Betrayal. Without the prossie.

Might it have been a TV thing? JI didn't really break through to films until the early 1980s. Dunno - maybe something like Langrishe Go Down with Judi Dench.

Just a thought.

yeah - definitely not Being Julia.

this film opened my eyes to Irons as an actor, so i know it's him in it. the film period seems to indicate late sixties or maybe seventies - it's script is very conservative in style until it contrasts with the gutteral element of his friends - he is either a doctor or philosopher and it focusses on this affair he has with this very neglected but well to do woman. Nyaaaah - this is freustrating! ends with the four of them in the attick around a very plain table supping wine and arguing - someone must know - pleeeeeeeeease. K

thanks folks - will try the thread on imdb.

i know most of the films well, especially Inland Empire - it's an older film.

do not remember checking 'Being Julia' sounds familiar. thanks. K

The only film in which Bates and JI appear together is Nijinsky, which sure ain't the film you're after!

I'm wondering if you're accidentally conflating several of JI's films, because the way you describe it there are elements of Damage [as CL has said above], but also Inland Empire, Being Julia, with bits of Stealing Beauty, and even Lolita.

Try those and see if anything jogs your memory!

Hope this helps.

I've had a good look on the I.M.D.B. too and nothing seems to fit all those variables. Have you asked in a thread there? There are bound to be some Jeremy Irons fans haging around.

thanks chocolate lady - been bugging me for ages this. i didn't see it from the start when it was aired, so i only saw it from half way through. i cannot remember if the loft apartment they end up in is in rainy London or Paris. his friend is supposed to be away and i thought it was played by Alan Bennet but i can't be sure on that. certainly an Alan Bennet sort of character.

i did check all the films on imdb and none of the photos looked remotely like the film i saw.

the script was superbly mature - the ex-prostitute takes Iron's lover's stiff-upper-lip moral silence and awkwardness (vulnerability) as judgmental cowardice, while Irons and the friend argue over each other having separate conversations. all i know is that Iron's lover was a highly acclaimed actress. the ex-pro was definitely french or playing french. cheers - K

I originally thought Damage but I don't recall the ex-prostitute thing in that, and he has an affair with his son's fiance, not a married woman. Perhaps you're thinking of Betrayal?
