Posted - 07/21/2008 : 16:28:55 I've got a query from a friend of a friend that I thought people here might be able to help with, and I thought it might be a good basis for a game.
Post a definition and people have to guess the word described. (Obviously don't copy and paste a definition or give anything too well known, as then there will be no challenge. And make sure that you have a particular word in mind rather than are just speculating that there may be one.)
The term we are trying to find means something like an inherently inanimate/immobile/benign object in the context of it nevertheless causing harm or having the potential to cause harm. An example would be a bollard (but almost anything could possibly fit). The person came across the term a few years ago but cannot now remember it. |

Posted - 07/29/2008 : 02:52:52 You're right, it's something more technical (or literary or something) than that, and I get the impression that it's a noun. I've had no luck either. |

Posted - 07/22/2008 : 06:00:58 I my first thought was "innocuous" since you might say that the object was seemingly innocuous but used as a weapon.
I'm sure that's not what you're looking for.
(And I'm shocked that I spelt it correctly on the first try!)

Posted - 07/21/2008 : 18:26:49 I guess maybe, but as that is more obviously weapon-like it's possible that this word doesn't mean that, and I think it may more mean a benign thing happening to do harm than one being used by a conscious agent. |

Posted - 07/21/2008 : 16:52:37 You mean something like knitting needle being used as a weapon?
