I just watched it for the first time since 1974. It is such a loving portrait of the "ungovernable" city I adopted 14 years later. It looks as real as 1969's MIDNIGHT COWBOY [except for the seamless cooperation among the municipal bureaucracy; that could only happen in a movie], but it allows you to laugh too.

When this film was shot, NYC was about to swoon financially, but it's since re-emerged and re-assumed its rightful place as the greatest city in the world. Now, it's just fun to watch the Apple when it was on its knees.

All hail Walter Matthau, Jerry Stiller, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, and especially Robert Shaw. A great two hours!

All I know is I've scored it 7/10 (that means I liked it but wasn't blown away), and haven't seen (and won't see) the remake.

One of my faves, along with The French Connection. The Big Apple: worms and all; take a big bite.

Yes, the ham-handed remake leached out all the whimsy, but the real fun comes from time-traveling back to 1974. Plus the superb cast. Definitely put it on your list.

Totes agrees! benj -- rent it tonight! I bet Lisa will love it too

I'm ashamed to say I've never seen the original (and more ashamed to say I saw the remake). Will seek it out.
