Come back Penn & Teller, all is forgiven! Well, actually there's nothing to forgive with P&T and oh how I wish this piece of glitzy-dreck film had even a whiff of their brilliance

Now, here's something - back in 1994 a young-ish writer/director called Boaz Yakin made a film called Fresh - a blow-you-away simple, powerful insightful piece about a black kid from a nasty hood who becomes a chess champ. It had great characters and some very juicy ideas. I thought if there were any justice in LaLa Land, Boaz was on his way to a fine career.

I kept looking out for his name. Yeah, there were some sporadic features, but let's face it, he never matched that Fresh promise.

Now, up he pops, co-scripting with the mediocre Ed Solomon a blueprint for director Louis Leterrier to kick around as mindlessly as his previous air-fluff confections.

Sigh!

So, by now you all know the film - paced like some curved-road-hugging posh and gleaming car ad shot along the hairpin bend Riviera - catapults us into a world of show-biz magic in order to twist us into a far-from-legal money scam.

There's something weird about it all, something that never quite rings true ... but, hey, that's what show-biz magic is, innit? A con, a scam - although, as we're bopped over the head with the distinction - if it's for entertainment, well, hey, that's all right, but if it ain't - woo-woo, big no-no.

So, there's a robbery caper or three, triggering an international investigation spiced up by the presence of a cool blonde Interpol agent. Now, once upon a time I had the enormous privilege to research a drama series based at Interpol HQ in Lyons, so I can tell you with some authority that Interpol cops do not do street work.

Oh, if that were the only lapse of logic in this tawdry tale.

The acting's fine - but then again ... who the fuck ARE these people they're playing. Boaz! Get in here while I interrogate you!

Penn & Teller! Get out your pen ... and tell 'er!
