Posted - 04/10/2013 : 21:59:11 There is nothing new here. To put it in Sci-Fi terms it begins a little like an inversion of Waterworld mixed with Wall-E, then dips in and out of Philip K. Dick , stealing from Robocop along the way (heavily armoured drones), before turning all Mad Max and then settling into a sort of Independence Day plus smatterings of I Am Legend and all with a Adam and Eve overtones.
a generous 4/10

Posted - 04/29/2013 : 21:45:15 Yeah, well, coming late to this party - nope, didn't just see it - did that thang a couple of weeks back. Since when have been rolling it around like some sliver of food that just won't get chewed.
Why the hesitation? Partly because of dem's quite-right nod to the superb tekkie stuff. The jaw-dropping art direction, which had better be on everyone's shortlist. And the stunning camerawork & editing.
But, having finally spit out the chewed morsel, I'm with Beanie overall. Not necessarily because of the more-than-homages - but because it's just too pretentious. It pretends a depth it just doesn't have. It pretends to be ideas, but instead of ideas there are "what ifs." And they're never the basis for true story-telling. Just for a superficial skeleton that isn't even real, but merely a resin-copy for an anatomy class.
Yeah, you can hang stuff on it, but it will never become flesh.
And I ain't even going to deal with the quasi-Dickensian coincidences. Just silly in this silliness saga.
But what is totally missing is any understanding of human behavior. And that's nothing to do with the acting. Whatever you think of Cruise [and, from the little I know of him from the media, I sure wouldn't want to invite him to supper] - he can, has, does, continues to turn in very creditable characterizations which occasionally are inspired [vis Born on the Fourth of July].
Nope the film's real bad-guy is the script. We may be watching ultra-human beings [not wanting to give too much away here] - but the heart of the story is allegedly about people. About emotion. About consequence.
Shame, after all, it's inconsequential.

Posted - 04/19/2013 : 11:13:20 I may seem to be dissing it too heavily by saying I'll wait for the DVD: I usually do. It takes something really special [AVATAR, SKYFALL] to drag me to the cinema these days and face noisy crowds, blinking mobiles and sticky floors. Our little media room puts on an acceptable big-screen show without these distractions. But I do take your recommendation seriously. |

Posted - 04/19/2013 : 04:41:35 I think that would be a shame Randall - I wasn't bothered in the slightest that the film borrows heavily from other sci-fi classics, what doesn't? But visually and aurally it is spectacular, with much more character and compelling plot than Kosinski's last film (the similarly beautifully created TRON Legacy). I was put off watching that film in the cinema because of bad reviews, but very glad I wasn't for Oblivion. In my opinion it's definitely worth catching on the biggest screen you can find. |
