Posted - 10/06/2012 : 16:35:41 Bond season is upon us - Happy 50th, JB.
The new movie will be out on 26th October (in the UK). I know very little about it. I don't want to hear anythingabout it before I see it, other than the words "It's much better than Quantum of Solace".
Anyway, the theme tune has been released. Adele sings it, sounding a lot like Shirley Bassey. Click here to listen. |

I loved the way the 50th anniversary film served as a Moebius strip to take us back to a point in time before the very first one.
That blend was the icing on the cake :-) |

Posted - 01/05/2013 : 21:06:13 I think this is one of those pictures that Bond fans will be coming back to 25 years from now and saying, "That was a great one." Just as they do now re GOLDFINGER. |

I didn't have that 'Joker' feel, but I did think Bardem was a superb Bond villain, at least the histrionic part.
Absolutely - one of the best, actually.
And that little pass he made at Bond - the best sexual chemistry of the whole film (of all three of Craig's films, actually).

Watching Bardem's Silva I kept thinking to myself 'who does this remind me of?'.
About 48 hours later it came to me--Ledger's Joker. Anyone else feel that?
Hm... never thought of that, but... yes, there is a small similarity - in the character more than anything else. |

Posted - 11/26/2012 : 10:48:29 Well, finally, Bond has returned to being HUMAN again. Mendes has certainly kicked off those horridly fake CGI video-game fight scenes that both Casino and Quantum were fraught with. Moreover, he also doesn't have the instantaneous healing qualities of the Cheerleader from "Heroes" anymore. I particularly appreciated when he showed up in M's apartment, he looked like SHIT, just like he should have. And he's got some funny lines! "Health and Safety, carry on" being one of the best!
I have some niggles about this film, but despite those, Skyfall as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. If you want to enjoy it, take the whole package.

P.P.S. We attended on the first Saturday showing at our neighborhood cinema. It was packed, and the lines waiting for the next screening afterwards were the longest we've ever seen. I can assure you that at least in the US, this is a MAMMOTH blockbuster.
Uhm -- I don't remember any mammoths. Are you sure you weren't that watching Ice Age sequel?

OK, I'll put it another way. This picture is a GO-rilla! |

Posted - 11/10/2012 : 18:41:05 Just got back. I loved it. Finally, Craig is allowed a few moments of levity. Perfect celebration of Bond's 50th, b/c it harkens back to many, many, many old Bond flicks.
benj, I agree with you on the silhouetted fight scene. Though it was clever and pretty, it yanked me out of the picture and I expected somebody to start singing another main-title song.
However, a splendid production, both in front of and behind the camera. I used to attend every three years mainly out of loyalty and usually came away thinking, meh. But now, for the first time in years and years, I'm actually looking forward to the next Bond picture!
P.S. Movie nerds, please note: this production was so large that for the first time in *my* memory, not everybody got their name in the end-credit roll! After the key people in each department rolled, there was a line that said something like, "Thanks to our great [DEPARTMENT] people!" Blockbuster payrolls are now officially too large for end credits!

Posted - 11/06/2012 : 23:31:30 Daniel Craig has signed up for the next two Bond movies. I have heard on the grapevine that they could be filmed as a two-parter. |

Visually, the silhouetted fight in the skyscraper was my favourite bit.
It was very nicely shot but I did find it a bit of an odd stylistic change that kind of took me out the film somewhat. For me, it made the fight less perilous or involving, in fact, thinking about it now it almost felt like a Bond title sequence mid-film |

How was the flick in IMAX?
It looked utterly fantastic- most notably the Shanghai scenes and the opening sequence. The fight on the train and the bike chase across the rooftops (where you could really appreciate the truly seamless blending of Craig's face onto what must have been a stunt biker) came across as especially precarious and really got the adrenaline going.
The whole thing was really crisp of course, but those the external action scenes were definitely the stand-out moments.

Posted - 11/03/2012 : 16:16:58 Went to see the film this morning. Both me and Mrs C really enjoyed it. Full of action, it's a back-to-basics, few-frills-attached Bond for the 21st century. You could probably cut Quantum of Solace out of the Bond story line and not miss anything from the continuity of the story.
I have to agree with what BaftaBabe said, and more eloquently than I could hope to do. I like DC as Bond, and I think he's more like Fleming's original Bond, and the early movie Bond, than anything we've had since. I like the new Q, and Javier Bardem does a very good line in creepy.
Mild spoiler: There are several references through the movie of the "out with the old, in with the new" kind, emphasising that this is a New Bond and that's the way it's going to be.
Oh, and as a follow-up to my original post, it's much much better than Quantum of Solace. |
