So, where does that lead us?

Call Me By Your Name is an episodic bildungsroman with good intentions, but unfocused in theme. There's a certain creepiness factor to the idea of a relationship between a man in his late twenties and a boy who is about seventeen. Its not a bad film, but its flawed and not particularly memorable.

Coco was essentially flawless in terms of story and execution. It got two well-deserved (and predictable) nominations for Animated Feature and Song, but it deserved much more. Michael Giacchino's score in particular is unique in the way it blends Hollywood adventure film score of the John Williams variety with Latin cultural arrangements and melodies.

The big surprise of the year is the respect for which Get Out received despite its underdog status as a horror comedy about African American anxieties. The Academy was wise to see the cultural and aesthetic value the film has.

I have not yet seen Shape of Water or Three Billboards.

Same here. I never disliked him, but never really liked him either until I saw Norman. I was hoping for a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Norman too, but figured that was more of a long shot.

I was less than smitten by The Shape of Water, but I truly thought Three Billboards Outside... was a stellarly wonderful film. Hoping a lot for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell (despite his comment that acclaim is going to ruin his career!!)
